How to Create a Multi-Step Form
Break long forms into manageable steps with progress bars. Increase completion rates by reducing perceived complexity.

Plan your form sections
Divide your form into logical groups. For example, an event registration might have: Personal Details (Step 1), Event Preferences (Step 2), and Payment (Step 3). Aim for 3-5 steps maximum.
Create your form
Start a new form and add all fields. Organize them in the order they'll appear across steps.
Add page breaks
Between each section, add a "Page Break" element. This creates a new step. Each page break separates the form into a new step with its own screen.
Configure progress bar
In form settings, enable the progress bar. Choose between a percentage bar, numbered steps, or dot indicators. The progress bar shows respondents how far they are.
Add conditional steps (optional)
Use conditional logic to skip irrelevant steps. For example, if a user selects "Virtual Attendance", skip the "Meal Preferences" step entirely.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many steps should my form have?
Keep it between 3-5 steps. More than 5 steps can feel overwhelming. Group related fields to minimize the number of steps.
Can users go back to previous steps?
Yes. Users can navigate back and forth between steps using back/next buttons without losing their entered data.
Does it save progress?
Form data persists across steps within a session. If the user leaves and returns, they may need to start over (session-dependent).
Do multi-step forms increase completion rates?
Yes. Studies show multi-step forms can increase completion rates by 50-80% compared to equivalent single-page forms, especially for longer forms (10+ fields).
